The inspiration for the theme of this post was some humor that drummer man (my crush from uni) has on his de.licio.us site. One is an ad by artist Miranda July, constructed with the same humor as her movies. Her new book is also supposed to be exceptional, there was a recent story by her in the New Yorker that I am still looking for. Her website is interactive--think of your favorite word!, interview with her from Powells.
The second inspiration was a link to a series of videos of vegetable instruments, carrot-pan flute video below, and full compilation on Youtube. :-)
In health and other news:
Naomi has been listening to some great NPR podcasts while she volunteers at Plan, here's one on the U.S. presidential candidate's health care plans, with commentary from Jon Oberlander from UNC Chapel Hill. Oberlander very clearly explains individual mandates, here's a forum with more detail from the Kaiser Family Foundation. Naomi also told me about a new collection of romance stories edited by Jeffrey Eugenides on romance, which he promises to be delightfully macrabe, here. My ongoing romance with the Thatcher-loving, british banker boy (ack!) has heightened my own sense of dark humor, I have a story for anyone with a strong stomach...
Friday was my last day at Time. Thanks to the age calculator, I know that I've been involved with the magazine, in some shape or form for 5 years and 8.8 months, from the day that I started my internship in Tokyo to this past Friday. If someone had told me on my first day, when I walked into the Kamiyacho bureau in my suit and new pumps, that I would end up moving to Hong Kong and eventually become an editor for the magazine, I wouldn't have believed them. Almost six years is a long time and my last day was very emotional for me--I was overwhelmed by how gracious and kind people were. But I woke up on Saturday morning feeing light and free. I spent a couple of hours cleaning up my office and sending out final emails, and left my passkey on the secretary's desk on the way out...
